Water Tanks & Water Storage Solutions for Hydroponic Systems

Water Storage Solutions for Large Greenhouses and Indoor Grow Facilities

At Integrated Water Process, we believe that water storage is much more than the irrigation water tank. Our Total Water Management approach incorporates the best water tanks into holistic water storage solutions for any hydroponic system. This approach ensures that any tank or water storage solution is specifically designed to meet the needs of large scale commercial greenhouses and indoor cannabis grow facilities.

Our water storage solutions are beneficial in a variety of larger volume water process applications including holding reserves of freshwater, rainwater, or condensate collection, and wastewater catchment for treatment or recovery. We also specify and deliver several smaller volume water storage solutions for irrigation water tanks for catching, or “Day Storage” tanks. We will also specify and provide storage for any concentrated nutrients and additives used in your unique water process.

Our water storage solutions are designed to help you consolidate and simplify your water management.

Four Main Benefits of our Water Storage Solutions for Large-Scale Commercial Hydroponics

1. Improved Root Health and Reduced Biosecurity Risks

Our advanced water circulation systems ensure homogenous water reserves, to maintain the stability of critical water process control parameters such as temperature (T), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Potential Hydrogen (pH), Oxygen Reduction Potential (ORP), and Electro-Conductivity (EC).

This stability forms the foundation for cultivators and indoor growers to fine-tune their feeding programs and precision irrigation strategies, resulting in whiter roots, enhanced growth rates, higher yields, and superior quality produce.

With built-in filtration systems and temperature control features, our water storage solutions are designed to maintain optimal conditions for plant growth. Keeping water storage temperatures within the range of 18-20°C is crucial for maintaining adequate dissolved oxygen saturation, promoting root health, and reducing the risk of pathogen development. Ensure your plants receive the best water quality with our expertly designed solutions.

2. Our ‘Total Water Management’ approach reduces costs

Effective Water Storage Planning minimizes costly mistakes in design, procurement, installation, and maintenance. Our customized water storage solutions maximize storage capacity in limited spaces, helping you achieve a smaller water room footprint and freeing up valuable space for other operations. With building costs ranging from $100 to $500+ per square foot, saving space translates directly into cost savings!

For large-scale commercial greenhouse operators and indoor cannabis growers, scalability and modularity are essential. We offer integrated water tanks and water storage solutions tailored for hydroponic applications, whether you’re expanding nationwide or just starting out. Our modular water storage systems allow for easy expansion, ensuring your system can grow with your business. Future-proof your operations with our scalable solutions, reducing future costs and avoiding the need for a complete overhaul of existing hydroponic water systems.

3. Safeguard your hydroponic operation from the risk of service or source disruptions

Water storage is a kind of insurance that safeguards your hydroponic operation from service or source disruptions. By maintaining a reserve of water, you ensure that your plants receive a consistent supply even during “unexpected interruptions in your primary water source” (Resh, 2013) .

This buffer can be critical in mitigating the risks associated with power outages, pump and plumbing failures, or source related issues, or municipal water outage. Additionally, having a water storage system in place allows you to better manage and control the water quality which can significantly improve plant health, growth, and to-market yields.

Investing in a reliable water storage solution not only protects your crops from potential crises but also provides peace of mind, knowing that your hydroponic system can continue to function smoothly regardless of external circumstances.

4. Durable and long lasting water storage solutions

The hydroponic water tanks and tank liners we plan for are built from durable materials and corrosion and chemically resistant to ensure durability for a long-lasting water storage solution.

What materials are generally used to make tanks for hydroponics systems?

For a large-scale indoor cannabis growing operation utilizing commercial hydroponics systems, selecting the right type of water storage solution is important because in many ways this is the foundation of your water system. Here are several types of water tanks that are ideal for such setups:

  • Polyethylene Tanks: Polyethylene tanks are durable and do not corrode. They are also very resistant to chemicals and breakdown from UV rays, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Their lightweight nature and flexibility when connecting plumbing makes installation and relocation relatively easy.
  • Steel Silo Style Collapsible Tanks: For operations where space is at a premium or flexibility is needed in water storage, collapsible tanks offer a practical solution. They can be expanded when in use and collapsed for easy storage when not needed, making them ideal for seasonal or expansionary phases of the operation. They are available in various materials, including polyethylene and steel silo’s with liners materials like EPDM or PVC that provide options to meet different needs for water storage.
  • Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Tanks: FRP tanks are known for their strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. They can handle various temperatures and chemicals, making them ideal for the diverse needs of hydroponic cannabis cultivation. These tanks are also non-porous, which reduces the risk of algae growth and makes them easy to clean. They are used for nutrient stock tanks given these properties.
  • Concrete Tanks and Catchment Basins: Though less common in indoor settings due to their weight and permanence, concrete tanks offer exceptional durability and thermal mass, which can help regulate water temperature. These tanks are suitable for very large-scale operations that require substantial water storage and where tanks can be integrated into the building’s structure.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the best material for water tanks in large-scale hydroponics systems for cannabis?

The best materials will always depend on your specific requirements; however, polyethylene and steel silo style tanks are highly recommended. Polyethylene is quick to deliver, cost-effective, durable, and safe for most water storage applications. Steel silos can be assembled, and disassembled, are often easier and safer to enter, and can be a cost-effective solution starting at 5,000 gallons of water storage.

How do I determine the right size for a water tank in a commercial hydroponics setup?

Determining the amount of “ideal” water storage is an elusive topic. If you have a reliable city water source and minimum pretreatment requirements then 1 Day’s worth of water consumed by the cultivation water processes is a good starting point for your water solution planning.

Therefore, the size of your water tank should be based on multiples of the maximum daily total water consumed by your planned cultivation processes. Thinking in terms of operational water days in process means that your crop may need in 0, 1, 2, or even 3 or more days of stored fresh water reserves depending on the reliability and redundancy of the water source, and how much water is already stored within the hydroponics system. For instance, a Deep Water Culture (DWC) pond is much more resilient than a precision drip system or continuously streaming NFT to a water service disruption.

Can I use collapsible water tanks for my indoor cannabis hydroponics system?

Yes, collapsible water tanks are suitable for indoor cannabis hydroponics systems, especially where future plans are not known and floor plan flexibility is important or when tank materials would otherwise not fit through existing or planned access.

How often should I clean my hydroponic water tank, and what is the process?

For a freshwater tank, it is recommended to perform a complete cleanout of your hydroponic water tank as often as once between each crop cycle or quarterly to inspect, prevent algae and microbial growth, and remove sediment to maintain water quality. This process typically involves draining the tank, washing the inside and outside down with disinfectant cleaner, washing and spraying down the inside of the tank and refilling for a fresh clean water start.

By subscribing to our regular testing service, we could establish thresholds and detect if and when it is appropriate for a wash down spray down type cleaning. Learn more about our water testing and analysis services.

How do I monitor and maintain the water quality in my hydroponic water tank for optimal cannabis growth?

Monitoring and amending the water quality of your stored freshwater reserves is what separates the professionals from the amateurs. Your water quality is established upstream with a water filtration system to help remove impurities and contaminants prior to filling up your tank. Furthermore once inside the tank it is easy to recirculate, neutralize, and treat for added water quality!
